Safety and authority first

Record the damage safely

Photograph the vehicle from each corner and the damaged area only if you can do so without entering danger. Note fluid leaks, broken glass, deployed airbags and wheel alignment.

Do not handle exposed electrical or high-voltage components.

Check whether it can roll

Look at whether wheels are intact and pointing normally. Steering or suspension damage may prevent normal loading even when the engine runs.

Do not drive an accident-damaged vehicle just because it starts.

Choose the destination

Options can include a repairer, bodyshop, insurer-nominated site, home or secure storage. Obtain the receiving contact and opening hours.

If the destination changes after loading, additional mileage and arrangements may apply.

Keep records

Retain job references, photographs and handover information. These can support discussions with the insurer, repairer or owner without making assumptions about liability.
