Accident Recovery: The Next Steps
What to record and arrange once people are safe and the damaged vehicle can be collected.
Record the damage safely
Photograph the vehicle from each corner and the damaged area only if you can do so without entering danger. Note fluid leaks, broken glass, deployed airbags and wheel alignment.
Do not handle exposed electrical or high-voltage components.
Check whether it can roll
Look at whether wheels are intact and pointing normally. Steering or suspension damage may prevent normal loading even when the engine runs.
Do not drive an accident-damaged vehicle just because it starts.
Choose the destination
Options can include a repairer, bodyshop, insurer-nominated site, home or secure storage. Obtain the receiving contact and opening hours.
If the destination changes after loading, additional mileage and arrangements may apply.
Keep records
Retain job references, photographs and handover information. These can support discussions with the insurer, repairer or owner without making assumptions about liability.

Questions about this topic
These answers are general. The live vehicle, position and access still need to be checked.
Who decides where the car goes?
The authorised owner, insurer or responsible party should agree the destination before collection.
Can I drive it if damage looks cosmetic?
Hidden wheel, suspension, lighting or structural damage may make driving unsafe. Seek proper assessment.
What if there is leaking fluid?
Keep people away, inform emergency services where necessary and tell the recovery operator.
