Car Won't Start: What the Symptoms May Mean

No lights and no response

A completely dark dashboard can point towards a discharged battery, loose connection, main electrical supply problem or key/security issue. Check only what you can inspect safely and without dismantling the vehicle.

Tell the operator whether central locking works and whether any clicking is heard.

Rapid clicking or slow cranking

Rapid clicking, dimming lights or a starter that turns very slowly often fits a low-voltage battery symptom. It does not prove the battery is the only problem; a charging fault or poor connection may be responsible.

A suitable jump start may get the engine running, after which the cause should still be checked.

The engine cranks normally but does not start

Normal-speed cranking with no start is less typical of a simple flat battery. Fuel, ignition, sensor, immobiliser and mechanical faults are among many possibilities that require proper diagnosis.

Repeated cranking can flatten the battery and may not help. Roadside assessment or recovery can be more sensible.

It stopped while driving

A vehicle that stops while driving should not automatically be treated as a flat battery. Note warning lights, loss of power, temperature, noises and whether the steering or brakes changed.

If it stopped in traffic or on a high-speed road, deal with safety and exact location first.

Choose the next service

Jump-start assistance is suited to credible low-battery symptoms in a safe accessible place. Battery replacement is appropriate when the specification and failure are understood. Recovery is appropriate where the cause is uncertain, the vehicle should not continue or roadside work is unsafe.
