Motorway Breakdown Safety
How to report an accurate motorway location and when emergency services must take priority.
Recognise an emergency
Call 999 where the vehicle is stopped in a live lane, there is immediate danger, somebody is injured, a collision has occurred or the vehicle is creating a serious obstruction. Private recovery should not be treated as a way to bypass police or National Highways control.
Follow instructions from emergency services, road operators and signs. Smart-motorway systems may close lanes or direct you to an emergency area.
Give the carriageway details
State the road number and direction before the nearest town. 'M27 eastbound between junctions 8 and 9' is actionable; 'near Southampton' is not. Add any service-area, emergency-area, slip-road or marker information.
Do not cross a carriageway or walk into danger to find a sign. Use details visible from a safe position.
Explain the vehicle position
Confirm whether the vehicle is in a live lane, hard shoulder, emergency area, service area, lay-by or beyond a barrier. The lawful and safe collection method depends on this.
If an official operator moves the vehicle, update the private recovery company with the final release location.
Describe the condition
Motorway speed can turn a tyre, wheel or suspension failure into significant damage. Mention any wheel sitting at an angle, bodywork rubbing a tyre, fluid leak or deployed airbag.
Do not force the vehicle to move simply to make collection easier.
Agree the onward destination
A garage, home address or other receiving location should be confirmed before loading. Check opening hours and access if the job is late at night.
If the vehicle is part of an insurer-managed incident, establish who has authority to instruct and pay for the movement.
Useful checklist
- Emergency services contacted where required
- Road number and direction recorded
- Nearest junction or marker known
- Final safe collection point confirmed
- Vehicle damage described
- Receiving destination ready
Questions about this topic
These answers are general. The live vehicle, position and access still need to be checked.
Can a private operator recover from any motorway position?
No. The position must be safe and lawfully accessible, and official incident control takes priority.
Why is direction of travel so important?
Opposite carriageways may have completely different access routes even when they are physically close.
Should I use the online form in a live lane?
No. Call 999 and focus on immediate safety.
