How to Prepare a Car for Transport

The practical checks that make collection, loading and handover smoother.

Confirm collection authority

The collection contact must know the vehicle is being released and have any keys, documents, buyer reference or gate instruction ready. Auction and dealer sites may refuse collection without the exact authorisation.

Share the driver's or operator's details only through the agreed process.

Report the current condition

Confirm whether the vehicle starts, drives, rolls, steers and brakes. Mention warning lights, flat tyres, body damage, low clearance, fluid leaks and missing parts.

Photographs taken shortly before collection provide a useful condition record.

Remove or secure belongings

Take valuables and personal documents out of the vehicle. Secure loose parts, spare wheels and accessories that have been agreed for transport.

Do not load the car with unlisted household goods or hazardous items.

Check both addresses

Provide complete postcodes, contacts, opening hours and access instructions. Confirm height, width, gates, slopes and parking restrictions.

The receiving location must have somewhere lawful and practical to unload.

Prepare for handover

Keep all agreed keys and release documents together. Make sure the battery and electronic parking brake status are known where the vehicle is a non-runner.

Record any existing damage and agree what receipt or signature is required.

Useful checklist

  • Collection contact authorised
  • Keys and references ready
  • Current condition photographed
  • Loose items removed or secured
  • Destination open and accessible
  • Handover contact confirmed

Questions about this topic

These answers are general. The live vehicle, position and access still need to be checked.

Can I leave items inside the vehicle?

Only items expressly agreed and safely secured. Personal possessions should be removed.

Should I fill the fuel tank?

No. A small sensible amount is normally enough; discuss special requirements for a non-runner or long-stored vehicle.

What if the condition changes before collection?

Tell AtWheel immediately because the loading plan and price may need review.
