Locating a vehicle on the A30
The A30 passes through different local and through-road settings. Give the nearest town as well as the road, direction and precise position. A vehicle at a business entrance or a car park off the A30 should be described using the actual site address.
Tell us whether police or traffic officers are involved and follow their instructions. Do not walk along the carriageway or cross traffic to read a sign. A map pin can help when it can be shared from a safe place, but say if the position is uncertain.
If you cannot get the vehicle to a place of relative safety and cannot exit safely, stay belted in, keep hazards on and call 999 for the police. Follow official instructions. Read the Highway Code for the full guidance.
What to tell AtWheel
Give the registration, make, model and what happened. Explain whether the vehicle rolls, steers and has keys. Damage, fluid leaks, a trailer or a heavy load may change the equipment needed. Mention passengers and any mobility requirements so the arrangements can be discussed.
A private recovery booking does not authorise work in an unsafe traffic position. Access and attendance depend on the scene, suitable equipment and any road-authority instructions.
Agreeing an onward destination
For this part of Hampshire, our Basingstoke recovery guide and Hook recovery guide may help with local collection and delivery questions. The destination still needs a full address and a person or garage able to accept the vehicle.
Choose a home, repairer or another suitable destination and confirm access before booking. Ask separately about passengers, key handover and delivery outside normal opening hours.
Recovery pricing and availability
The standard AtWheel recovery call-out is £100. Mileage and job extras are quoted separately. Give the actual route and vehicle condition so the complete job can be checked before a price is agreed.
Call for current availability. A website cannot promise a response time or assess traffic conditions for a live incident. For the practical safety steps, see our motorway breakdown guide.
Local streets and through-road sections
The A30 passes through varied settings around Basingstoke, Hook and north Hampshire. Give the nearest town or junction as well as the road and current position. Explain whether the car is exposed to traffic, at a roadside business or in a parking area off the route. The road number alone does not show which entrance or approach is needed.
If a warning appeared on the A30 but you stopped at premises, give their actual address. Do not replace a road position with a nearby postcode that happens to be easy to find. Use only safely available location information, say if it is uncertain and follow official guidance where traffic creates danger. A recovery assessment should start with the present circumstances rather than the intended journey.
Business entrances and a vehicle at work
For a car or van at business premises, provide the unit, yard or parking section and the entrance used for collections. Ask whether security needs notice and whether a staff member must meet the driver. A postal address may identify reception rather than the vehicle. Explain opening hours and any restriction that will apply during the proposed collection window.
Arrange keys and release authority. If a fleet office coordinates the movement remotely, give an on-site location contact and the person who can approve changes. Keep the registration and agreed destination consistent between them. A recovery booking does not automatically authorise entry or allow the operator to move unrelated vehicles that block access. Tell AtWheel about those obstacles before the plan is confirmed.
A non-start at a stop along the route
Explain the starting response in plain language: whether the engine turns, cranks slowly, clicks or displays a warning. Mention recent faults and any help already attempted. Give the exact model, including electric or hybrid power. A jump-start enquiry may be suitable in some situations, but the cause should not be assumed from the fact that the car was parked.
If recovery is needed, report wheel movement, steering and keys separately. A car can fail to start yet roll normally, while another has a locked brake or damaged wheel. Do not force controls or push the vehicle into traffic to improve access. At a managed parking site, describe barriers and release requirements as well as the mechanical symptoms so both service and collection can be assessed.
A planned movement from a seller or garage
For transport from an A30-area address, ask the seller or workshop for a current condition description. A vehicle advertised as a project may have missing parts or seized brakes that affect loading. Confirm release arrangements and a keyholder before booking. Transport does not complete the purchase process or override another business’s conditions for releasing the vehicle.
Ask the recipient whether it can accept the car in its present state and obtain an unloading entrance and time. A home needs suitable space for a non-runner to remain, while a workshop may have a narrow receiving window. List loose parts or extra items expressly and discuss passenger needs separately. The quotation should cover a clearly described movement between two confirmed locations.
Confirming the full cost and current arrangements
The standard recovery call-out is £100, with mileage and job extras separately quoted. Planned transport is individually priced using the complete route and requirements. A short local transfer can still involve restricted access or difficult loading, so distance alone does not define the cost. Ask for the full amount, availability and agreed handover arrangements before accepting a booking.
Update AtWheel if the car changes location, the keyholder becomes unavailable or the recipient alters its receiving hours. A collection moved from open parking into a locked compound needs a new access description. If officials are managing a road incident, follow their instructions and communicate relevant changes. The equipment assessment and quotation should remain tied to the vehicle and circumstances that will actually be presented.
Can a colleague hand over a workplace vehicle?
A colleague can be part of an agreed handover if they have permission, keys and the correct instructions. Give their contact and identify who can approve costs or destination changes if that is somebody else. Confirm the business entrance and any security process before booking. A person who can point out the car may not be authorised to release it, so make those roles clear when arranging an A30-area workplace collection.
