Locating a vehicle on the A338
The A338 includes the route between Ringwood and Fordingbridge and continues beyond Hampshire. Give the nearest safely identifiable junction or place, the direction and the full collection position. Explain when the vehicle is on a side road rather than the main route.
Tell us whether police or traffic officers are involved and follow their instructions. Do not walk along the carriageway or cross traffic to read a sign. A map pin can help when it can be shared from a safe place, but say if the position is uncertain.
If you cannot get the vehicle to a place of relative safety and cannot exit safely, stay belted in, keep hazards on and call 999 for the police. Follow official instructions. Read the Highway Code for the full guidance.
What to tell AtWheel
Give the registration, make, model and what happened. Explain whether the vehicle rolls, steers and has keys. Damage, fluid leaks, a trailer or a heavy load may change the equipment needed. Mention passengers and any mobility requirements so the arrangements can be discussed.
A private recovery booking does not authorise work in an unsafe traffic position. Access and attendance depend on the scene, suitable equipment and any road-authority instructions.
Agreeing an onward destination
For this part of Hampshire, our Ringwood recovery guide and Fordingbridge recovery guide may help with local collection and delivery questions. The destination still needs a full address and a person or garage able to accept the vehicle.
Choose a home, repairer or another suitable destination and confirm access before booking. Ask separately about passengers, key handover and delivery outside normal opening hours.
Recovery pricing and availability
The standard AtWheel recovery call-out is £100. Mileage and job extras are quoted separately. Give the actual route and vehicle condition so the complete job can be checked before a price is agreed.
Call for current availability. A website cannot promise a response time or assess traffic conditions for a live incident. For the practical safety steps, see our motorway breakdown guide.
Ringwood, Fordingbridge and the route beyond
For an A338 breakdown, give the nearest safely identifiable town or junction and the direction of travel. The route continues beyond Hampshire, so the road number or county name alone does not locate the car. Explain whether the vehicle is on the main road, a side road, a lay-by or premises reached after the fault. Use the current stopped position rather than the original point where symptoms began.
A safe map pin may help, but pair it with the road and location description. Say if a detail is uncertain and follow official guidance about immediate risk from traffic. Do not cross the road or walk along it to inspect signs. A recovery operator needs an accurate account of the scene before access and suitable equipment can be assessed.
Rural access and property entrances
For a car at a property off the A338, supply the name, full postcode and the entrance that reaches it. Explain narrow bridges, gates, tight turns or unsuitable surfaces on the approach. A postal address may identify a house while the vehicle is in an outlying yard. Ask the owner about the route and any permission needed for a visiting recovery vehicle.
Do not assume a field, verge or neighbouring driveway can be used for loading. Describe where the car actually stands and any obstacle. If unrelated vehicles block access, arrange with their owners for safe removal where possible. Avoid towing a non-runner out onto the road as preparation. The operator should assess the existing position using the facts and safely available photographs.
Transport after a private purchase along the corridor
A seller should confirm the vehicle’s present condition, not merely repeat its advert. Ask separately whether it starts, drives, rolls and steers and whether keys are available. Report seized brakes, flat tyres, missing parts and damage. A car described as an easy repair can still have a loading problem, so the movement needs to be based on what is actually known.
Complete payment and release arrangements directly with the seller before treating the car as ready. Name an authorised handover person and keep a contact available who can approve a change. At delivery, ensure the buyer or garage accepts the current condition and has unloading space. A transport booking does not resolve an unfinished sale or override a site’s release requirements.
A breakdown during a longer journey
Explain the fault in ordinary language and avoid attempting repairs in an exposed road position. If the car has safely reached premises and will not restart, report the starting response and help already attempted. A battery diagnosis should not be assumed. Give the exact model and identify electric or hybrid power, plus any trailer or load that affects the complete job.
Choose the destination with the intended recipient. A local garage may have no immediate space, while transport home may involve a much longer route. Confirm acceptance, receiving hours and the unloading entrance before booking. Discuss passenger travel and any separate storage or later movement expressly. A quotation for one recovery should not be treated as including an unspecified series of onward arrangements.
Price and updates across a boundary-crossing route
AtWheel’s £100 standard recovery call-out has mileage and job extras separately quoted. Planned transport is individually priced using the full collection and delivery locations. Provide both addresses, exact vehicle and handling details for the complete amount. Explain fixed site or seller availability separately from preferred dates. A nearby town name cannot establish current response time or access to a live incident.
Tell AtWheel if the car moves, a keyholder becomes unavailable or the recipient changes its hours. If another authorised service removes the vehicle from the road, supply the new collection site and release contact. Follow official directions at the scene. The quotation and plan should be reviewed when the actual route, condition or access differs from the information on which the enquiry was first based.
Does the county boundary change the information needed?
The same practical details are needed on either side: full collection and delivery addresses, exact vehicle, condition, access and handover contacts. A county name alone does not define the journey or establish availability. Give both postcodes and site names, particularly when a rural address is unfamiliar. The A338 route extends beyond Hampshire, so the actual endpoints should be clear before a transport quotation or collection arrangement is agreed.
