Locating a vehicle on the A36

For an A36 recovery enquiry, provide the nearest town or junction and direction of travel. Tell us if the vehicle is on the main road, at roadside premises or on a rural access. A boundary-crossing movement needs the complete collection and delivery locations.

Tell us whether police or traffic officers are involved and follow their instructions. Do not walk along the carriageway or cross traffic to read a sign. A map pin can help when it can be shared from a safe place, but say if the position is uncertain.

In a live lane or unable to get to safety?

If you cannot get the vehicle to a place of relative safety and cannot exit safely, stay belted in, keep hazards on and call 999 for the police. Follow official instructions. Read the Highway Code for the full guidance.

What to tell AtWheel

Give the registration, make, model and what happened. Explain whether the vehicle rolls, steers and has keys. Damage, fluid leaks, a trailer or a heavy load may change the equipment needed. Mention passengers and any mobility requirements so the arrangements can be discussed.

A private recovery booking does not authorise work in an unsafe traffic position. Access and attendance depend on the scene, suitable equipment and any road-authority instructions.

Agreeing an onward destination

For this part of Hampshire, our Totton recovery guide and Romsey recovery guide may help with local collection and delivery questions. The destination still needs a full address and a person or garage able to accept the vehicle.

Choose a home, repairer or another suitable destination and confirm access before booking. Ask separately about passengers, key handover and delivery outside normal opening hours.

Recovery pricing and availability

The standard AtWheel recovery call-out is £100. Mileage and job extras are quoted separately. Give the actual route and vehicle condition so the complete job can be checked before a price is agreed.

Call for current availability. A website cannot promise a response time or assess traffic conditions for a live incident. For the practical safety steps, see our motorway breakdown guide.

Identify the section and the actual stopped location

For an A36 enquiry, give the nearest town, junction or safely identifiable site as well as direction and current position. The route continues beyond the immediate Totton and western Hampshire area, so a broad road name leaves uncertainty. Explain whether the car is on the main carriageway, a side road, at roadside premises or within a rural property.

If a fault began on the A36 but you reached another site, provide that collection address and entrance. Do not use a nearby postcode as a substitute for a vehicle still exposed to traffic. Follow official breakdown guidance and say when location information is uncertain. Signs, markers and photographs should only be obtained where there is a safe way to do so.

A business or rural entrance beside the road

Name the premises and identify the gate that reaches the vehicle. Ask whether collections use a different entrance from customers or visitors. Mention barriers, fixed opening hours, narrow turns or unsuitable surfaces. A map pin can help locate an unfamiliar property, but it does not show permission to enter or all restrictions on the approach for recovery equipment.

Arrange access with the responsible person and confirm release authority and keys. If another vehicle blocks the route, ask its owner to make it available to move normally where possible. Do not push a non-runner onto a verge or use neighbouring land without agreement. Describe the actual position and let the operator assess a safe approach rather than promising a collection point that does not yet exist.

A journey that crosses the county boundary

Provide the complete collection and delivery addresses when the movement goes beyond Hampshire. County labels do not define the route or the recipient’s access. A local garage should confirm it can accept the vehicle in its current condition, while a home farther away needs suitable unloading space. The intended destination should be agreed before the recovery is treated as booked.

Discuss passenger travel separately and explain any mobility requirement, trailer or extra equipment. A quotation for one vehicle should not be assumed to cover additional units or every onward travel need. If the recipient is undecided, say so. A later decision to take the car elsewhere can change the mileage, timing and receiving arrangements and should prompt review of the original quotation.

Describe symptoms and handling as separate matters

Tell AtWheel what happened before the stop, including warnings, loss of power or damage. For a non-start at premises, explain whether the engine turns and what the dashboard shows, plus any help already attempted. A battery issue may be possible, but it should not be presented as certain without assessment. Give the exact model and identify electric or hybrid power.

For transport, report whether wheels roll, steering works and keys are available. Mention a brake that will not release, damaged suspension, low clearance or a van load. Those facts affect handling independently of why the journey ended. Do not attempt repairs beside traffic, force controls or improvise a tow to change the car’s position. Known limitations and honest uncertainties are useful information for planning.

A clear quote and an available handover contact

The standard recovery call-out is £100, with mileage and job extras separately quoted. Planned transport has an individual price based on the complete route and requirements. Ask for the full amount, availability and agreed handover arrangements before confirming. A website cannot promise a live response time, and a short distance on a map does not remove access or loading considerations.

Keep a main contact available and report a moved vehicle, missing key, changed site restriction or revised receiving window. If officials direct another service to relocate the car, supply the new collection and release details and follow their instructions. An earlier quotation should be reviewed when the actual route or handling changes. Consistent information helps align the planned movement with the circumstances that exist when collection becomes possible.

What if another service has already moved the vehicle?

Use the new location for the onward transport enquiry and tell AtWheel who controls release. Obtain the site address, entrance, hours and key arrangements. Explain any changed condition and confirm the receiving destination. The original A36 incident location remains useful background, but it is no longer the collection point. Ask for the onward movement to be assessed and priced using the current facts, including any restrictions at the new site.

Let’s get your vehicle sorted.

Tell us where you are, what has happened and where the vehicle needs to go.
