Locating a vehicle on the M27

The M27 is a major east–west route across south Hampshire. Give the direction of travel and nearest junction or service area; a nearby town alone may identify the wrong carriageway. Be clear if the vehicle is on a slip road or local approach rather than the motorway itself.

Tell us whether police or traffic officers are involved and follow their instructions. Do not walk along the carriageway or cross traffic to read a sign. A map pin can help when it can be shared from a safe place, but say if the position is uncertain.

In a live lane or unable to get to safety?

If you cannot get the vehicle to a place of relative safety and cannot exit safely, stay belted in, keep hazards on and call 999 for the police. Follow official instructions. Read the Highway Code for the full guidance.

What to tell AtWheel

Give the registration, make, model and what happened. Explain whether the vehicle rolls, steers and has keys. Damage, fluid leaks, a trailer or a heavy load may change the equipment needed. Mention passengers and any mobility requirements so the arrangements can be discussed.

A private recovery booking does not authorise work in an unsafe traffic position. Access and attendance depend on the scene, suitable equipment and any road-authority instructions.

Agreeing an onward destination

For this part of Hampshire, our Southampton recovery guide and Fareham recovery guide may help with local collection and delivery questions. The destination still needs a full address and a person or garage able to accept the vehicle.

Choose a home, repairer or another suitable destination and confirm access before booking. Ask separately about passengers, key handover and delivery outside normal opening hours.

Recovery pricing and availability

Once immediate safety has been addressed, call AtWheel on 07444 400271 to discuss M27 recovery availability and a quote. Give the actual route and vehicle condition so the complete job can be checked before a price is agreed.

Call for current availability. A website cannot promise a response time or assess traffic conditions for a live incident. For the practical safety steps, see our motorway breakdown guide.

Describe the M27 position before discussing a destination

Start with the carriageway direction and the nearest location information you can read safely. Say whether the vehicle is in a live lane, an emergency area, a service area, a slip road or somewhere off the motorway. These are materially different situations. A reference to Southampton, Fareham or Portsmouth is helpful context, but it cannot replace the current stopping position.

If another person is calling on your behalf, ask them to pass on the location exactly. Do not combine the junction where symptoms began with the place the car eventually stopped. If the position is uncertain, say so. A recovery enquiry should work from an honest description while the appropriate authorities deal with any immediate danger.

What changes after the vehicle reaches a service area

A car parked at services still needs a precise collection point. Give the service location, carriageway direction and parking section, and mention any barrier or restricted area. Explain whether it is an ordinary accessible bay or a position obstructed by other vehicles. If site staff have moved the car or given access instructions, pass on the current arrangement rather than an earlier description.

Tell AtWheel whether keys and a handover person are available. If you leave the site, agree who is authorised to release the car and how the driver will find it. A service-area address does not remove the need to assess wheel movement, steering and damage. It also does not automatically settle parking restrictions or allow a recovery vehicle to use an unauthorised access route.

The vehicle’s symptoms and its loading condition

Explain what happened before the stop: a loss of power, warning, overheating concern, impact or a non-start after parking. Use observations rather than a diagnosis you are unsure about. Give the registration and exact model, and identify an electric or hybrid vehicle. Do not attempt repairs beside motorway traffic or repeatedly restart a car with symptoms that need assessment.

Separately, explain whether the wheels roll and the steering moves. Mention an applied parking brake, missing keys, damaged suspension or loose bodywork. A trailer, van load or unusually low vehicle should be disclosed too. Those facts can affect equipment and handling regardless of the original fault. Photographs are optional and should only be taken when there is a safe way to do so.

Choosing a garage after an interrupted M27 journey

The closest garage is not necessarily able to receive the car. Contact the intended repairer and ask whether it can accept a non-runner, identify an unloading entrance and agree a receiving time. A workshop appointment for diagnosis and a delivery arrangement are separate matters. If you prefer recovery home, describe the driveway or parking area so the vehicle has somewhere suitable to remain.

Tell us if the destination is still undecided. Do not use a provisional garage address as though acceptance has already been obtained. Changing the destination after a quotation can alter the route, timing and cost. Discuss passenger travel separately, including any mobility requirement, and explain extra items or a trailer instead of assuming a one-vehicle recovery includes them.

Keeping the booking consistent with the live incident

A recovery quotation for an M27 enquiry needs the precise location, vehicle condition and intended destination. Tell us about any instructions already given by police or traffic officers. Ask for the complete amount and what it covers before accepting a booking. A website cannot assess the live traffic position or promise that a particular operator can attend immediately.

Keep the contact number available and report changes. The vehicle may be moved by an authorised service, a garage may withdraw its receiving slot or officials may impose a different arrangement. Tell AtWheel as soon as that happens. A private booking should not compete with instructions at the scene, and an earlier quotation should be reviewed if the actual collection or onward journey changes.

Can the car go to a garage that is closed?

Only use a receiving arrangement that has been agreed with the garage. Check whether it accepts an undriveable vehicle outside normal hours, where unloading is permitted and how keys will be handed over. Do not assume its forecourt is available because it appears open. If acceptance cannot be confirmed, discuss another suitable destination before the M27 recovery is booked. An unconfirmed address can create an avoidable problem after the vehicle has already been collected.

Let’s get your vehicle sorted.

Tell us where you are, what has happened and where the vehicle needs to go.
