Moving a car when the owner cannot attend
A Cosham vehicle collection is sometimes arranged by a buyer, relative or business contact who will not be beside the car. Start by identifying who can authorise release and who will physically hold the keys. Those may be different people. AtWheel needs a clear contact for each role so the collection does not depend on last-minute messages between people who have different information about the vehicle.
Give the registration, make and model, exact parking position and intended destination. If the owner cannot inspect the car, ask a suitable keyholder to describe its present condition. Does it start, roll and steer? Is any damage visible? Are all the keys available? Unknown answers should remain unknown in the enquiry, rather than becoming assumptions that the car will load normally. Our vehicle transport service is planned from the current job details.
For a car left at managed premises, discuss release with the site operator. Having the owner's permission does not automatically open a controlled gate or allow a transporter into every part of a site. Agree who will meet the operator and provide any reference or appointment instructions. If you are organising collection for a family member, give everyone the same contact and destination so the movement remains straightforward even when the owner is elsewhere.
Hospital and other managed-site collections
Queen Alexandra Hospital has separate main and north multi-storey car parks. If a planned vehicle movement concerns a car left there, identify the actual parking area, level and bay. The general hospital address is not the collection point. Obtain the site's current advice on outside collection and pass it to AtWheel; we do not assume a patient or visitor entrance is suitable for transporting a car.
AtWheel can work with 2.1 m clearance, but the whole access route needs assessment. A posted height, ramp, tight turn and the vehicle's position all matter. We do not give a universal clearance figure for the hospital or promise access to every level. If the vehicle cannot steer or release its parking brake, add that to the access details. Safe photographs may help explain the layout without anyone attempting to move it.
Wootton Street car park is another Cosham example where care is needed: the council publishes a 2.0 m restriction, below the confirmed 2.1 m capability. A car there needs a specific access discussion. Raising a barrier would not automatically make a route suitable, and access below 2.1 m is not promised. If the issue is an urgent non-start rather than a planned collection, contact our Cosham recovery service with the immediate circumstances.
Workshop moves and cars awaiting specialist work
Before arranging a transfer from a Cosham garage, ask how the vehicle will be presented for loading. Work may have changed its condition since arrival. Wheels may be removed, the battery disconnected or parts left loose. Explain these details to AtWheel and the receiving repairer. “At a garage” does not mean “ready to drive onto transport”, and the person collecting the car needs the workshop's current description.
Give the workshop's vehicle entrance, release hours and keyholder. For a destination workshop, confirm the unloading area and who will accept the vehicle. The two businesses may have different working patterns, so disclose any fixed deadline before asking us to agree a time. A collection slot only helps when the recipient is ready for the car in the condition it will arrive.
If the move is part of a trade purchase, obtain the stock reference and collection instructions. The auction and dealer collection page explains useful preparation. Resolve the seller's payment and release conditions directly before collection. AtWheel's transport arrangement does not settle an incomplete purchase, authorise release without the seller's agreement or replace the checks you choose to make as a buyer.
Understanding the full-route price
Our transport mileage is £3 per mile, calculated from PO13 8DG to the collection postcode and then from collection to delivery. The first leg is part of the cost even though your car is not yet loaded. A short journey between two Cosham addresses therefore should not be priced by multiplying only that short distance. The stated route does not automatically add a return journey to base after delivery.
For an illustration using invented distances, 20 miles to collection plus 12 miles to delivery total 32 miles, giving a £96 mileage amount at £3 per mile. This is not a quoted Cosham price. The actual postcodes, vehicle and loading needs determine the enquiry, and job extras are checked before confirmation. The recovery call-out is a different service charge, not an automatic addition to this transport formula.
Use the online transport quote form to submit both locations and the car's details. A calculation or enquiry does not guarantee a booking slot or complete payment. Include the date you want and anything that limits release, such as staff availability or a gate opening window. If you later change the destination, tell AtWheel so the route and agreed amount can be reviewed.
Non-runners: describe movement separately from starting
An engine that does not start may leave the car otherwise straightforward to move. A locked wheel or damaged suspension creates a different issue. For non-runner transport, tell us separately about the wheels, steering, parking brake and keys. Mention any collision damage, fluid leak or removed part. We need the actual condition, not just the repair you believe will eventually make it run.
If the vehicle has been parked for a long time, ask for current information rather than relying on an old sale photograph. Do not ask somebody to drag it out, force a brake or test it on a slope just to answer our questions. A clear statement that movement has not been checked is useful. We can discuss whether more information or a different loading arrangement is needed before committing to the collection.
Low or modified cars also need their approach considered. Tell us about suspension changes, spoilers and a steep driveway lip. Our classic car transport information helps owners set out relevant handling needs, but no specialist arrangement is assumed until discussed for that car. A current view of the parked vehicle and entrance can support the enquiry where safe and appropriate.
Van movements and business contacts
AtWheel can discuss vans up to 3,500 kg, subject to actual vehicle suitability. State the body type and what is carried, including fitted racking, tools, stock or roof equipment. A converted vehicle needs its dimensions and current weight considered. If it is at a business with controlled access, provide the unit, gate and contact authorised to release it rather than only the registered office address.
Discuss any extra items before they are loaded into the van for transport. A booking for a vehicle is not automatically a separate goods movement or a passenger service. If several people are involved, nominate one decision-maker who knows the full arrangement. That avoids a driver, office and seller each giving a different destination or promising access that has not been checked.
The delivery position deserves as much attention as pickup
At a home, identify where the car can remain after unloading. A vehicle that cannot start should not arrive in a position that immediately blocks access and requires another move. Tell us about gates, slopes and shared driveways, and arrange an authorised recipient for the keys. At a workshop, confirm that the agreed space can accept the car in its actual condition and that the receiving team knows what loose parts accompany it.
Keep a simple list of the intended handover items and contacts. If the owner, releasing person and recipient are different, share the same instructions with all of them. Changes should be passed to AtWheel before the collection window. A new parking location or a brake that has seized since quotation can affect the job even though the postcode has stayed the same.
Arranging the Cosham movement
For a route involving the wider city, see Portsmouth car transport; for nearby western collections, see Portchester vehicle transport. Use the full addresses whichever locality is involved. Call 07444 400271 with the car, route and keyholder details to discuss availability. AtWheel, part of SteelMarch Group, will work through the handover and quotation so the collection is based on what has been agreed by the people at both ends.
