Collecting a car when you cannot drive it away
You do not need a breakdown to need vehicle transport. You may have bought a car in New Milton, arranged repairs elsewhere or decided to move a vehicle that has been standing at another property. AtWheel's planned collection service gives that movement its own booking discussion. Tell us why the car needs transporting and whether it is ready now or depends on a seller, workshop or keyholder doing something first.
The useful starting information is the registration, make, model and full addresses. We also need to know whether the car starts, rolls and steers. A description such as “project car” can cover anything from an ordinary non-starter to a vehicle missing major parts. Explain its present state rather than the work you intend to do later. Our Hampshire vehicle transport page outlines how the broader service works, while this page concentrates on arranging a New Milton collection.
Preparing the seller before requesting a date
For a private purchase, ask the seller where the vehicle is physically kept and who can release it. A correspondence address may be different from the garage, driveway or storage site containing the car. Confirm that keys are available and that the seller knows a transporter will collect it. AtWheel cannot complete an unresolved sale agreement or obtain a vehicle that the releasing party has not authorised for collection.
If you live elsewhere, it helps to nominate one person who can answer questions on collection day. Obtain photos of the approach and parking position with the seller's agreement. Ask about a locked gate, other cars in front and any awkward entrance. A date only becomes workable when the vehicle is accessible during the proposed window. Do not agree a narrow appointment with the seller before checking that AtWheel can accommodate it.
Keep purchase documents and payment arrangements between you and the seller clear. Tell us how keys and agreed accompanying items should be handed over. A boot full of spares or extra wheels may affect the job and needs discussing in advance. Listing those items is more useful than simply saying that everything “comes with the car”, because the transport assessment must account for what is actually being moved.
New Milton town addresses and coastal properties
New Milton and Barton on Sea are closely connected, but a coastal property is not interchangeable with a town-centre collection point. Include the exact street and postcode rather than just the area name. If the address uses Old Milton, preserve that detail when passing on directions. At a holiday property or managed site, identify the vehicle gate and the authorised person who can admit the transporter. Reception access and vehicle-loading access may be different.
For a driveway collection, tell us about the approach from the road, including slopes and sharp changes in level. At a car park, identify the bay or row and any height restriction. We do not expect you to redesign the access or push a non-runner into the street. We need enough information to decide whether the existing position can be handled safely. An open space shown in an old photograph may have changed, so ask for a current description.
If the car is actually nearer Lymington, use that address in the enquiry; if it is going to a workshop around Totton, supply the workshop's delivery entrance. The mileage calculation follows both real locations. Nearby-area pages are there to help plan the movement, not to replace the full route or imply that there is a separate AtWheel depot in every town.
The transport mileage calculation
AtWheel charges £3 per mile for the route from PO13 8DG to the collection postcode and then on to the delivery postcode. Both stages count. A quote based only on New Milton to the destination would leave out the journey to reach the car. The stated calculation does not automatically include a return leg after delivery. It also does not use the standard recovery call-out as an assumed extra transport charge.
As a made-up example, a 45-mile approach followed by a 25-mile delivery leg would make 70 miles, producing a £210 mileage amount. That is an illustration of the calculation, not a price for a particular New Milton journey. The real route, vehicle suitability and any handling extras must be checked. The postcode quote form lets you provide the locations and job details so the correct route can be considered.
An estimate or enquiry submission is not a guaranteed booking slot, and the form should not be read as confirmation that payment and scheduling are complete. Give us your preferred day and any release deadline. If the price relies on an accessible, rolling vehicle and it later turns out to have seized brakes, update the enquiry. The point of checking the facts is to make sure the agreed amount refers to the job that will actually happen.
Returning a stored or little-used car to a workshop
A car that has been standing at a second property may not be in the condition remembered by its owner. Before booking, ask the keyholder whether the tyres hold air, whether the car can move and whether there is visible damage or leakage. Do not ask them to force a parking brake or improvise a tow to answer a question. If something is unknown, record it as unknown and have the loading requirement discussed.
For transport of a non-runner, wheels, steering and access are especially useful details. An engine that does not start is only one part of the assessment. Tell us if parts are removed or stored separately, or if the car has been lowered since it last moved. The receiving garage needs this information too, because it must have somewhere suitable to unload and hold the car before work begins.
If the non-start is unexpected and you are stranded today, our New Milton recovery service is the relevant starting point. Planned transport is intended for an agreed future movement, whereas an immediate breakdown needs its location and safety considered first. Explain the circumstances when calling so your enquiry reaches the right discussion from the outset.
Classic cars and dealer collections
For a classic or cherished vehicle, state any handling considerations plainly: low bodywork, modified suspension, unusual controls or a requirement from the owner or repairer. We can consider those details when assessing the move. The classic car transport information helps you prepare an enquiry without assuming that every historic car needs the same collection method. Photographs of the car and entrance can support the description.
A dealer or trade collection needs the business's release procedure followed. Provide the stock number, registration, collection contact and any appointment instructions. Opening to customers does not necessarily mean the handover team can release a car at any time. See dealer and auction collection for the details worth obtaining. If the receiving workshop has different hours, both ends must fit the same proposed collection plan.
Vans, covered spaces and information that changes the job
AtWheel can discuss vans up to 3,500 kg, with their load and dimensions checked. Mention shelving, tools, materials and roof fittings rather than assuming the vehicle is empty. For an entrance with a height limit, provide the signed clearance. Our equipment can work with 2.1 m clearance, but ramps, turning room and the car's position still determine whether access is suitable. Access below 2.1 m is not part of that general promise.
Tell us about loose parts and any personal items you intend to leave in the car. Passenger travel is also a separate question, not an automatic part of moving the vehicle. These conversations keep the collection focused on what has been agreed. If the seller changes the parking location or the car develops a new fault, report it before the collection window rather than expecting the original arrangement to cover every change.
Making delivery useful to the person receiving it
Agree a practical unloading position with the recipient. A car that cannot start should arrive where it can remain until repaired; leaving it somewhere that immediately requires another move defeats the purpose. At a home, describe the available space and shared access. At a workshop, confirm who receives the keys and whether the team can accept a non-runner. Keep a contact reachable in case the stated entrance is locked or the agreed space is occupied.
Call 07444 400271 with those details to discuss the movement. AtWheel is part of SteelMarch Group and serves Hampshire customers with recovery and planned vehicle transport. For your New Milton booking, we will work through the route, release, vehicle condition and recipient together, so the collection is based on an accurate job description rather than a postcode and an assumed easy load.
