Buying a car parked on a Southsea street
When a seller says a car is ready to collect, ask where it is parked today. In Southsea that may be on a different street from the seller's address, with other cars close to its bumpers. AtWheel needs the present location, registration and condition to plan the collection. Give us the street and a nearby property number, the direction the car faces and whether it can move under its own power. Those details are more useful than the address printed on a sale document alone.
If the car cannot be driven, find out whether it rolls, steers and can release its parking brake. Ask the seller who will hold the keys during the proposed window. Do not assume that buying a non-runner means every loading requirement is already understood. A vehicle with an engine fault but freely moving wheels is different from one with a seized brake or damaged suspension. Our non-runner transport information explains the distinctions worth checking.
Arrange the purchase and release with the seller before treating the transport as booked. AtWheel moves the agreed vehicle; we do not resolve an unfinished sale or decide whether an advert is accurate. If a friend is meeting us instead of the owner, make sure they have authority and the correct keys. Give everyone the same collection contact and keep one person available to answer questions about the job.
Space for loading is part of the route
Two postcodes describe the journey, but they do not describe the loading space. Tell us about tight parking, a shared entrance, a gate or a car tucked behind another vehicle. If access depends on a neighbour moving a car, discuss that directly with them before offering a collection window. Do not reserve an unagreed area or move a disabled vehicle into the road on the assumption that it will simplify matters.
Southsea includes distinct resident parking zones, and temporary arrangements can affect an otherwise familiar street. Pass on the current signs and any access instructions relevant to the parked vehicle. A planned transport booking does not give the owner permission to use someone else's land or disregard parking controls. We can assess the actual location once it is described accurately and any necessary permissions are in place.
For wider city movements, see Portsmouth vehicle transport. For a car on the mainland side, Cosham vehicle transport may help with the enquiry. These are neighbouring coverage pages within AtWheel's Hampshire transport service. The job is still priced and planned from the precise collection and delivery addresses, rather than from a general city name.
Covered parking and seafront collection points
AtWheel can work with 2.1 m clearance, subject to the rest of the access being suitable. That does not establish access to every Southsea site. The council's published restriction for Seafront The Esplanade car park on Clarence Esplanade is 2.0 m, below that confirmed capability. If the car is there, or behind another lower entrance, discuss it specifically before relying on a standard transport arrangement.
For any covered or multi-storey space, provide the car park name, level, bay and signed clearance. Describe ramps and tight turns as well as the entrance. A car that cannot steer may need its position assessed differently from one that can be moved normally. Photographs can help when taken safely, but do not remove barriers or attempt a tow to demonstrate access. The site operator may need to approve an outside vehicle collection.
For seafront collections in open parking, name the exact road or site rather than “Southsea beach”. Explain who will be present with the keys and whether there are event-related access instructions at the time of collection. A planned handover should be based on current conditions. We do not promise that a location seen on an old photograph will be available or suitable on the chosen day.
£3 per mile: which miles count?
AtWheel calculates transport from PO13 8DG to the collection postcode, then from collection to delivery, at £3 per mile. Both legs are chargeable in that calculation. The distance between the seller and buyer is only the second part, so a short local delivery does not automatically mean a very small total. There is no automatic return-to-base leg in the stated route, and the recovery call-out is not a fee to assume for this planned transport service.
For a worked example using illustrative distances, an approach of 22 miles and a delivery leg of 14 miles total 36 miles. At £3 per mile the mileage amount would be £108. Those distances do not represent a quoted Southsea route. Your addresses determine the real calculation, and the vehicle, loading requirements and any job extras must be reviewed. Use the transport quote form to submit both postcodes with the practical details.
An online calculation or enquiry does not confirm a slot or complete an instant booking and payment. State your preferred date and any deadline when submitting it. If a dealer needs an appointment or a repairer can only receive the car during certain hours, include that information. If the address or vehicle condition changes later, the arrangement needs checking again so the price and access assumptions remain accurate.
Moving a car between workshops
A Southsea garage transfer should begin with a conversation about how the car will leave the first workshop. It may have arrived running and then had parts removed. Ask whether wheels, steering and brakes are in a condition suitable for the intended loading method, and tell us about loose components. The receiving garage should know the same facts before it agrees to take the vehicle.
Confirm the release entrance, staff contact and key handover. A customer reception address may not be the route into the workshop yard. Check when each business can take part in the movement, especially if the car is going to a specialist farther away. A date agreed at one end is not enough unless the other end can receive it. AtWheel will discuss availability around the actual requirements rather than an assumed all-day handover.
For a trade purchase, our dealer and auction collection page explains useful references and release details. If there are several cars of the same model at the premises, make the registration and stock reference clear. Payment and release conditions should be resolved with the seller before collection. Loose parts and extra wheels need to be listed in the enquiry instead of added without discussion on the day.
Cherished cars and vehicles that sit low
For a classic, modified or low car, tell us about ground clearance, spoilers and any special operating instructions. The angle between the road and a driveway can matter as much as the car's nominal height. A current photo of the entrance and vehicle can help explain the issue. See classic car transport for the details to prepare, then have the handling needs checked for your specific car.
Vans up to 3,500 kg can also be discussed, with the actual dimensions and load assessed. Mention racking, tools, roof equipment or a conversion. Passenger travel and additional items are separate matters to raise during the enquiry; they are not automatic features of transporting a vehicle. A clear description lets us assess the complete movement before promising a collection arrangement.
Delivery to a Southsea home or garage
At delivery, choose a place where the car can remain in its current condition. A non-runner placed across shared access may immediately need moving again. Tell us about gates, slopes and the intended final parking position. Arrange for the recipient to be present with permission to accept the car and receive the keys. If they cannot attend, agree an authorised alternative instead of leaving that decision until the vehicle is on its way.
Keep a record of the agreed accompanying items and handover contacts. If the seller and recipient never meet, both should still know what is being sent and received. For an immediate breakdown, use Southsea recovery rather than treating it as a routine future movement. For planned transport, call 07444 400271. AtWheel is part of SteelMarch Group, and we will work through the route, car and access so the booking describes the job you actually need.
