Begin with the delivery you need
Before arranging a collection, decide where the vehicle should finish. That may sound obvious, but a purchase intended for home can turn into a workshop delivery once its condition is understood. A garage may want the car at a particular entrance or only when someone is available to receive it. Get the full destination address and acceptance arrangements first. They determine the actual route and avoid paying to move the car somewhere that cannot accommodate it.
AtWheel arranges vehicle transport for agreed collections and deliveries in Winchester and elsewhere. We need the registration, make, model, condition and both locations. Tell us what the move is for and how flexible the dates are. A transport enquiry can be started before every detail is final, but mark provisional information clearly. The quotation and booking should reflect the confirmed vehicle and journey, not a set of assumptions made while a sale was still being negotiated.
If a car is arriving at your home as a non-runner, think about its next movement too. Leaving it at the back of a drive behind other vehicles might make the delivery possible but a later garage collection difficult. Describe gradients, narrow entrances and the intended resting place. We can discuss access before booking, while there is time to adjust the plan with the recipient rather than making a rushed decision when the car arrives.
Winchester parking addresses need to be specific
Winchester's parking arrangements include city-centre sites, park-and-walk facilities and several park-and-ride areas. The council lists South Winchester, Pitt, Barfield, Barfield Phase II and St Catherine's separately. If a vehicle is stored or awaiting collection in parking, give the precise name, section and level. The Barfield surface site and its separate multi-storey facility do not describe the same loading approach. Avoid using the general phrase “park and ride” as the entire collection instruction.
A meeting point convenient on foot may be unsuitable for loading a vehicle. Ask the car park or property operator where a transporter may enter and whether a visit requires permission. Keep tickets, access codes or release references with the booking information. If the owner will be elsewhere in the city, agree who can open barriers and hand over keys. Being reachable on a mobile phone is useful, but it does not replace a person needed to provide physical access.
For a residential seller, explain whether the car is on a drive, in a garage or on the street. Tell us about other parked vehicles and any tight change of direction at the entrance. A postcode generally locates the property, while those additional details describe the loading job. Photographs of the approach can help when safe to take. Do not ask someone to move an unroadworthy vehicle into public traffic simply to make it easier for a transporter to find.
How AtWheel calculates transport mileage
Our rate is £3 per mile for the route from PO13 8DG to the collection point, followed by collection to delivery. The journey to pick up the car is included in that calculation. A move within Winchester therefore cannot be priced from the collection-to-delivery distance alone. Give us both complete postcodes and the relevant vehicle details so the quotation can be checked against the job you actually want booked.
The stated arrangement does not automatically include a further return-to-base leg. Any job extras, access requirements and suitability are assessed separately and explained for the actual movement. A running car on an accessible forecourt is a different loading enquiry from one with locked wheels inside a garage, even when the two movements share the same postcodes.

It does not by itself book an appointment or complete online payment. If you change the destination after obtaining a quote, send the new address and ask us to check the route. Keeping a single up-to-date version of the job makes the price easier for everyone to follow.
Buying a car from a private owner
Ask the seller for the address where the vehicle is physically kept. An advertised Winchester location may be an area description rather than the handover point. Check who will be there, whether keys and relevant documents are available, and when release has been authorised. Agree your purchase terms directly with the seller. AtWheel collecting the vehicle does not replace your buying checks, inspection or confirmation that the description matches what you intend to purchase.
Get current answers about condition. A car that “ran when parked” may now have a discharged battery, a seized brake or missing parts. Ask whether it starts, drives, rolls and steers now, and whether the parking brake releases. If the seller has not checked, tell us that. It is better to plan around uncertainty than quote for a freely moving vehicle that turns out to require a different loading approach.
Confirm what accompanies the car. Spare wheels, detached panels, tools or an engine are not automatically included in a vehicle movement. List anything you expect to travel so weight and secure handling can be considered. Make sure the seller understands the agreed collection period and can make the vehicle accessible. If someone else must move a parked car or unlock an entrance, arrange it in advance rather than relying on that person being nearby by chance.
Dealers, repairers and specialist handovers
Where a business is releasing the car, obtain the collection contact as well as the general telephone number. Sales, accounts and workshop staff may each control part of the release. Confirm any payment or preparation requirements have been met before choosing a transport date. For a Winchester workshop transfer, establish how the vehicle will leave the first garage and enter the second. Ask about dismantling that has affected its ability to roll or steer. If parts have been removed, identify what is loose and whether it is to accompany the car. A vehicle can change substantially during repair work, so an old description from its original arrival should not automatically be used for the onward transport quote.
The receiving garage should know the actual condition and expected delivery arrangement. A booking for an inspection is not necessarily permission to leave a non-runner outside overnight. Obtain the unloading entrance and a person who can accept the keys. If either workshop changes the date or access requirements, inform AtWheel before collection. Coordination between the two sites is particularly useful when you are arranging the move remotely and will not be there yourself.
Handling non-runners and low-clearance vehicles
We can assess transport for non-running vehicles, using the details of how they move rather than the label alone. A locked steering wheel, damaged suspension, flat tyre or brake that will not release should be reported before booking. Tell us if the car is electric or hybrid and about known damage or handling information. Do not force controls or improvise a tow to turn an uncertain vehicle into a supposedly straightforward collection.
For restricted parking, AtWheel can work with 2.1m clearance, subject to checking the route and loading position. That does not mean every multi-storey is suitable or that we can enter beneath a lower barrier. Ramps, corners and overhead obstructions need assessment too. A low vehicle also requires information about its own ground clearance and modifications, particularly where the driveway or entrance changes gradient abruptly.

Preparing people, keys and timings
Nominate a contact at collection and another at delivery, even if one person is paying for both. Make sure each knows the agreed vehicle and arrangement. Have keys ready and explain any starting or locking procedure that the handover contact needs to demonstrate.
