How it works

What to expect from AtWheel dealer transport

Every job is different, but the information we need is simple: the vehicle, the exact location, how it moves, the access available and the destination. The guide below explains why those details matter and what happens after you contact us.

How we can help

Need a dealer vehicle moved safely and on time?

Dealer movements need clear collection and delivery contacts, vehicle condition and timing. We keep the instruction together from release through to handover. Call us for urgent work or send the details through the quote form when the job is planned. You will speak to AtWheel about the actual vehicle and location rather than being asked to fit the problem into a one-size-fits-all booking.

We regularly receive enquiries for dealer stock transfers, customer collection and delivery, workshop and bodyshop movements, auction collections, non-runner movements and repeat trade transport. You do not need to diagnose the fault or use recovery-industry terms. A simple description of what happened, what the vehicle does now and where it is standing gives us a much better starting point than an uncertain diagnosis.

Choosing the right option

We will tell you when another service would suit the job better

Not every call needs the same response. A safe battery boost may be enough for one vehicle, while another needs direct recovery because it has wheel damage, a serious warning light or no safe working space. Planned transport is different again: the journey is known in advance and both addresses can be checked before the vehicle is moved.

We will also be clear when private recovery cannot begin straight away. Repeat trade work still depends on accurate instructions for every vehicle; a standing account does not remove payload, access or condition checks. In those situations, follow the emergency services, road authority, insurer or site operator first. Once the scene is safe and accessible, we can discuss the next stage.

Before we set off

Tell us how the vehicle moves, not only why it stopped

Before we allocate a recovery or transport vehicle, we need to understand vehicle identity, sale or job reference, keys, movement condition, visible damage, fuel or charge state and any customer property that must be declared. These details tell us whether ordinary winch loading is realistic and whether extra loading aids or a different approach may be needed. A vehicle that starts but has a locked wheel can be more difficult to load than a non-runner that rolls and steers freely.

Size and clearance matter too. We consider the correct transporter for each vehicle category, including low-clearance, non-runner, motorcycle or light-commercial requirements where agreed. A registration lookup helps, but it cannot show a lowered suspension setup, heavy cargo, collapsed wheel, loose bodywork or a car parked tightly against a wall. Where anything is unusual, a wide photograph of the vehicle and its surroundings is extremely useful.

Access and loading

A recovery truck needs room to reach, align with and load the vehicle

Narrow drives, underground car parks, height barriers, steep slopes, soft ground, busy loading bays and tightly parked streets can all change the job. Tell us which way the vehicle is facing, how much space is available in front and behind it, and whether another vehicle, gate or wall blocks the approach. The same car can be a completely different job depending on where it has stopped.

Please check the delivery point as well. A garage may be closed, a storage compound may require an appointment and a residential address may not have enough unloading space. Giving us a receiving contact and opening hours before departure prevents the vehicle arriving somewhere that cannot accept it.

Pricing

How we work out a realistic price

Your quote can take account of route and dispatch mileage, vehicle category, repeat-work arrangement, access, waiting, timed handovers, loading condition and any multi-site coordination. Mileage is important, but it is not the whole job. The recovery vehicle must travel to the collection point, load safely, complete the loaded journey and hand the vehicle over. Waiting, difficult access or specialist loading can therefore matter even on a short route.

We will explain the price or pricing basis before the job is accepted. Where online route pricing is available, it remains an estimate until the vehicle, access and timing have been checked. If the situation is materially different when we arrive, we will explain what has changed before carrying out additional work.

Your destination

Where would you like the vehicle taken?

Depending on the job, we can discuss delivery to dealerships, workshops, bodyshops, customer addresses, auctions, preparation centres, storage compounds and approved trade premises. The best destination is not always the nearest one. It may be a trusted garage, an insurer-approved repairer, a specialist workshop, your home or a secure storage location.

Please confirm the full address, opening hours and name of the person receiving the vehicle. Dealer, auction and trade movements may also need a lot number, buyer reference or purchase order. Agreeing the handover before collection keeps the route clear and avoids decisions being made while the vehicle is already loaded.

Before you call

A few accurate details make the job much smoother

Have business account details, authorised contacts, stock or job reference, collection and delivery contacts, vehicle condition, keys and site opening hours ready where possible. Describe what you can see and hear instead of guessing at the failed part. “The car clicks once and the dashboard goes dark” is more useful than “the alternator has gone” when no test has been carried out.

Remove valuables, medicines and anything you will need immediately. Secure loose parts and tell us about any belongings or cargo that will remain in the vehicle. If someone else is releasing or receiving it, share their name and telephone number so the driver is not left waiting for authority.

What happens next

From your first call to the vehicle handover

Once we have the vehicle, location, condition and destination details, we confirm whether the job is suitable, what equipment is needed, current availability and the price or pricing basis. Urgent work is assessed against the live route and workload; planned work can normally be arranged around a practical collection window.

On arrival, the driver checks that the vehicle and access match the information supplied before loading. The vehicle is then secured, transported to the agreed destination and handed to the authorised person. If anything important has changed, the job is reassessed rather than continuing on an unsafe or unsuitable assumption.

Before and after collection

Keeping the details up to date from booking to handover

Before setting off, we confirm the registration, collection point, destination, vehicle condition and access. We check them again when we reach the vehicle, because faults and circumstances sometimes turn out to be different from the first description. A locked wheel, missing key, extra damage, heavier vehicle or closed destination can change the safest way to complete the job, the equipment needed and the price. When something important has changed, we pause and agree the next step rather than carrying on under the wrong assumptions.

At the destination, the vehicle should be left in the agreed position and handed to the correct person or business. Keys, release references and any paperwork are returned as instructed, and the customer is told when the movement is complete. Where access, waiting time or a change of destination affected the job, that is explained clearly rather than left for somebody else to discover later.

Useful access notes can make a repeat collection easier, but they still need checking each time. Gates, staff, opening hours, parked vehicles, road restrictions and the condition of the vehicle can all change. Current information from the customer or site contact is always more useful than assuming the next job will be exactly like the last one.
